The Readies deliver memorable, original songs wrapped in stirring, lush effects. Mesmerising electric riff cycles interlock with electronic drums and bass.
Range-slipping vocals morph from breathy to raw to crystalline. Bernard Robertson (guitar) is inspired by the precision of Kraftwerk, and by Ennio Morricone's guitar-mangling madness. Contrary to speculation, Ann-Maree McKee (vocals) is not obsessed with Blondie, but how can a girl not be influenced by the Queen of Cool?! "Rhinestones on velvet". Makes you think of the heady days of the 70s - disco, the decadence, the glamour. Well for local two-piece The Readies it's the shiny essence of their music. When I first heard The Readies' album Embrace Tiger it was hard to think that they were from Melbourne, the self-made rock capital of the world. The Readies instead seem to dwell in a dreamy far away place that is not just decades but galaxies away from our suburban wasteland. - Rory Jeffs, Beat Magazine |
